A temporary number or a number from an app?

They are built for different jobs. If you want a phone number you will use for calls and chats and keep for months, an app is the better buy. If all you need is one code for one sign-up, a temporary number covers it without a subscription.

Temporary number	Virtual number from an app
What you pay	One number for one sign-up, from $0.01	A monthly subscription, often for each number
If the code does not come	The money goes back to your balance after 20 minutes	Usually lost: a failed code is not refunded
WhatsApp, Telegram and similar apps	Many numbers come from mobile carriers, which these apps usually accept	The apps say codes are not guaranteed; some name WhatsApp and Telegram
Countries	211 countries	Mostly the US plus one or two
Setup	Nothing to install	Install an app and create an account
Calls and chats	No, SMS only	Yes, that is what they are for
Keep the number for months	No, it is for one sign-up	Yes, while you pay

What the apps say about codes themselves:

Hushed: “Hushed phone numbers are NOT guaranteed to work with third-party verification.” Source
TextFree: “Telegram shortcodes are not supported… Certain services like WhatsApp may also prevent the delivery of verification codes to VoIP numbers like ours.” Source
TextNow: “If you are outside of North America, you will not be able to register for an account.” Source

Questions

Do I need the number for calls or just for the code?

Just for the code. The number receives incoming SMS only: no calls and no messages you send. That is enough to get the Amazon verification code and finish sign-up.

Is a monthly plan necessary?

No. You pay for one number when you need it, from $0.01. There is no subscription.

What if the code does not come?

Cancel the number. If no code arrives within 20 minutes, the money goes back to your balance, and you can take another number or another country.

Can I use it for my bank?

No. Our numbers do not work for banks or government sites. Use them for apps and websites that ask for a phone number at sign-up.

Will someone else use my number for the same app?

No. After you get your code, the number is not sold again for Amazon.
